Wheat Beer, Explained: Cloudy, Citrusy and Utterly Refreshing

Wheat beer is one of the most approachable and refreshing styles in the world โ€” and one of the most misunderstood. Let's clear up a few things (pun intended).

What makes it โ€œwheatโ€ beer?

As the name suggests, wheat beer is brewed with a significant proportion of wheat alongside the usual barley malt. This gives the beer a softer, fuller mouthfeel and a gentle, bready sweetness that sets it apart from a standard lager.

Why is it cloudy?

That hazy, golden appearance is a feature, not a flaw. Many wheat beers are unfiltered, leaving natural proteins and yeast in suspension. This haze carries flavour and body โ€” which is exactly why a naturally cloudy wheat beer tastes so satisfying.

Where does the citrus come from?

In the Belgian-style tradition, brewers add ingredients like orange peel and coriander, which lend bright citrus and subtle spice. Combined with the right yeast and hops, the effect is a beer that's zesty, velvety and incredibly easy to love. Our Buddy is brewed in exactly this spirit.

How to serve it

Serve wheat beer well chilled in a tall glass. A gentle roll of the bottle before pouring helps rouse the yeast for that classic cloudy pour. Add a citrus garnish if you like โ€” and enjoy.
