Building a Froyo Bowl That Works as Breakfast

We are not suggesting you replace breakfast with dessert. We are pointing out that the gap between a frozen yogurt bowl and a fashionable smoothie bowl is narrower than it looks, and it comes down to what you put on it.

What a decent breakfast needs

  • Protein, so the morning does not collapse by eleven.
  • Fibre, for satiety and digestion.
  • Some fat, to slow everything down.
  • Carbohydrate, for energy.
  • Not too much sugar, so you are not chasing a crash.

A cultured base covers protein and some carbohydrate. The topping bar can cover the rest.

The build

Base: tart, not indulgent

Original Tart or Madagascar Vanilla. Skip Salted Caramel and Cookies & Cream — those carry more sugar and are not the point here.

Fruit: two, with fibre

Banana coins for potassium and slow carbohydrate. Berries for fibre and antioxidants with very little sugar. Together they carry the bowl.

Grain: rolled oats or granola

Oats are the better choice if available — plain rolled oats bring beta-glucan fibre with no added sugar. Granola works, with the caveat that it is sweetened.

Fat and protein: nuts and seeds

Almond flakes, chia and flax. This is the layer that decides whether you are still full at eleven o’clock.

Accent: honey, sparingly

A thread, not a pour. The fruit is already providing sweetness.

The finished bowl

Original Tart, banana coins, blueberries, rolled oats, almond flakes, chia seeds, a thread of honey.

Protein from cultured dairy and nuts. Fibre from oats, chia and fruit. Fat from almonds. Live cultures in the base. Considerably less sugar than most packaged breakfast cereals.

The honest caveats

It still contains added sugar in the base, which a bowl of plain dahi with fruit would not. And it is very cold, which not everyone wants first thing in the morning — particularly in a Mumbai monsoon.

Treat it as a good weekend breakfast rather than a daily habit, and it holds up perfectly well.

The home version

Thick dahi or Greek yogurt, straight from the fridge, with exactly the same toppings. Not frozen, no added sugar, and better for you than the counter version. We are quite comfortable saying so.
